Nobel Prize Education Fund

The Nobel Prize Education Fund is a 501(c)(3) designated US-non-profit organization created to support educational outreach focused on Nobel Laureates and their achievements. It is managed by the Nobel Foundation Rights Association.

In October-December 2011 the Nobel Prize Education Fund partnered with the National Geographic Society to produce a new speaker series, Big Idea, which featured Nobel Laureates in conversation with National Geographic Explorers. Under the unifying banner of exploration, these original pairings were hosted and moderated by leading broadcast journalist for National Geographic, Boyd Matson. Part of the National Geographic Live! series for 2011, these 3 ticketed evening events were held in Grosvenor Auditorium at the National Geographic Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Big Ideas: Events 2011

Previous events included Exploring the Edge of Existence, and featured National Geographic Explorer Bob Ballard and Nobel Laureate in Physics John Mather. Mather and Ballard explain how they have sought answers regarding the formation of the universe and life on this planet.

In Who Lives? Who Dies?, National Geographic Explorer Beth Shapiro and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Martin Chalfie, explored clues to how species function, live, and ultimately perish. Both explained how they have used emerging science to reveal a deeper understanding of life, its cycles and its secrets.

In the event, The Power of Choice, National Geographic Explorer Jared Diamond and Laureate in Economic Sciences Daniel McFadden were featured. They examined why humans make decisions in the way they do and what this means in the context of our current environmental challenges and the survival of the human species.
