Nils Ringertz, Founder of Nobelprize.org, Passes Away

June 11, 2002

 

Professor Nils Ringertz, 69, died suddenly on June 8

Nils Ringertz, professor emeritus of medical cell genetics, served for many years as a member of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet. Between 1993 and 1999 he was secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, as well as a member of the Nobel Foundation's Board of Directors. He took the initiative in establishing the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at Karolinska Institutet and served as its chairman during 1988-96. For more than thirty years, he was an editor of the scientific journal Experimental Cell Research and served during 1987-97 as its editor-in-chief.

In 1994 Professor Ringertz initiated the Nobel Foundation's virtual museum (NeM), now Nobelprize.org. Under his leadership, NeM has developed into a high-quality knowledge base with a steadily growing number of visitors from all over the world.
