Today we received word that the preliminary investigation by a Swedish public prosecutor concerning three members of the Nobel Committees in Physics, Chemistry and Physiology or Medicine has been closed. This investigation concerned suspicions of bribery in connection with two lecture trips to China carried out by these Committee members.
The grounds for the initiation of the investigation are still unknown to us, but we regard the decision to close the investigation as satisfactory and very much expected.
It is customary and desirable for scientists to carry out international lecture trips in the course of their work. The uncertainty that this investigation has generated among Swedish researchers is unfortunate, considering the importance of a free exchange of knowledge and experience.
We are pleased that this uncertainty now has been set aside.
