Nobel Prize Concert 2008, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir

13 May 2008

Nobel Media, in collaboration with the Stockholm Concert Hall, is proud to present this year's Nobel Prize Concert – an event of world class. The concert will be held on December 8 and form part of the official program of events during the Nobel Prize week. Tickets will be released to the general public on Thursday May 15.

This year's concert offers a fantastic collection of performers: Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, together with Eric Ericson's Chamber Choir and the soloists Miah Persson, soprano, Ann Hallenberg, alto, Helge Rönning, tenor, and Peter Mattei, bass. The orchestra, as is customary with the Nobel Concert, will be the Swedish Royal Philharmonic. The program will include Dvořák's Symphony nr 7 and Mozart's mass in C minor.

One of our time's most versatile conductors, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, will be making his first appearance in Stockholm in connection with this concert. Gardiner started conducting at the tender age of 15. As a student at Cambridge University he toured the Middle East with "the Oxford and Cambridge Singers", before founding the Monteverdi Choir in 1964. Up to this point he has recorded more than 250 albums and has won a long list of prizes and awards.

The Monteverdi Choir was formed in order to perform the Monteverdi Vespers (1610) at Kings College Chapel in Cambridge. The Monteverdi Choir has specialized in exploring early Baroque music and reviving neglected music by a number of composers such as Gabrieli, Gessualdo, Carissimi, etc., and presenting it to contemporary audiences. The Monteverdi Choir has also performed masterpieces by Handel, Bach and Mozart.

The Monteverdi Choir will sing together with Eric Ericson's Chamber Choir, founded in 1945 by Eric Ericson and which has since then come to play a central role in Swedish and international music circles.

The Nobel Prize Concert will be held in honor of this year's Nobel Prize Laureates, who will attend the concert along with their parties. Others present will be members of the Swedish Royal family and guests of the Nobel Foundation.

Tickets will be on sale to the general public and the ticket price will be in the range SEK 790 to 1690, which includes the printed program and champagne in the intermission.

The Nobel Prize Concert is sponsored by DnB NOR, Statkraft and LG Electronics.
