During his studies at Harvard, Lloyd Shapley was drafted in 1943, and served in the Army Air Corps in China. After World War II, he received the Bronze Star for cracking the Russian wheather code.

In 1950, Shapley invented the board game So Long Sucker, along with Mel Hausner, John Forbes Nash, and Martin Shubik.
