1901	Kasparek, Rostoworowski	de Bloch	Bloch was nominated for his work "The Future of War in its Technical, Economic and Political Relations" (6 vols., 1898). One of his conclusions was that there would be no decisive victories in future land wars between great powers; the armies would entrench themselves and the ensuing deadlock would last for years. Armed conflict would be determined not by military success but by the eventual economic collapse of societies.	Show »

1914	Heilberg	Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft Umfrid	Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft organized the 7th German peace conference in Kaiserslautern in May 1914, and it stressed the importance of improving Germany's relationship with France and Great Britain. Umfried was chairman of the Stuttgart Peace Society and vice-president of the German Peace Society. He worked hard to change the attitude of the German evangelical clergy towards peace. He wrote and published numerous articles on peace. His major work was "Europa den Europäern. Politische Ketzereien".	Show »
1924	Sahm	Viscount Cecil of Chelwood	Lord Cecil was one of the principal drafters of the League of Nations Covenant (1919). He contributed greatly to the establishment of the League's institutions and he took a leading role in the its activities. Already in 1916 he had begun to draw up an international peacekeeping agreement, and in 1919, when he attended the Paris Peace Conference, his ideas proved generally compatible with those of President Woodrow Wilson. Lord Cecil was also chairman of the "League of Nations Union" and he used it to raise British public opinion in favour of the League. He was member of the Council of the League of Nations and he contributed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict between Greece and Italy.	Show »

1931	Cybichowski	Butler Remarque	Butler advocated peace, international cooperation and arbitration. He supported the Briand-Kellogg Pact, and he promoted international understanding. Butler also assisted in the establishment of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, of which he was a trustee and later president (1925-45). Remarque was nominated for his novel "Im Westen nicht Neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) 1929, in which he depicted a realistic picture of the German army and the horrors of war.	Show »
