Motivation: Masaryk promoted humanism, ethics, and pacifism. As a Czechoslovakian nationalist he fought to defend the Slav peoples against Austrian-Hungarian imperialism. He successfully acted as mediator between Austria-Hungary and Serbia in 1912. During World War I Masaryk advocated democratic rights and human liberation. He was the chief founder and first president of Czechoslovakia.
