Motivation:	Remarque was nominated for his novel "Im Westen nicht Neues" (All Quiet on the Western Front) 1929, in which he depicted a realistic picture of the German army and the horrors of war. Butler advocated peace, international cooperation and arbitration. He supported the Briand-Kellogg Pact, and he promoted international understanding. Butler also assisted in the establishment of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, of which he was a trustee and later president (1925-45).
