Løvland, Jørgen Gunnarsson 1848 - 1922
Customs Officer, Teacher, Newspaper Editor and Politician Liberal

Jørgen Gunnarsson Løvland was member of the board of the Liberal Party (Venstre) in 1883-1892 and in 1909-1922. He was a member of the Storting in 1886-1888, 1892-1897 and in 1913-1915. In the period 1892-1897 he was President of the Odelsting. In 1898 he joined the Norwegian Government, first as Minister of Labor, later as a member of the cabinet department in Stockholm in 1899-1900.

Jørgen Løvland was Norwegian representative at the conference in Karlstad in 1905, which led to the dissolution of the Swedish-Norwegian union. He was Norway's first Foreign Minister in 1905-1908 and Prime Minister in 1907-1908. Løvland was member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee 1901-1921, serving as the committee's chairman in all those years.
