August (Elokuu)

This is one of the best novels of Finnish Nobelist Sillanpää. The story is about love, marriage, the loss ... but also about the nature, as all important work of now almost forgotten author. "Elokuu" was filmed by Matti Kassila, it is one of the best Finnish films. I do not know if it is available internationally. There is a translation in Swedish: "Skördemånad", which is "Harvesting Season" or something like that in English.

People in the Summer Night (Ihmiset suviyössä)

The novel is very nicely arranged with vignettes from lives of the characters over the course of a few summer nights (from the land of midnight sun). The description of the nature is almost lyrical and stunningly beautiful. I read this book from the library, and liked it so much that I didn't rest till I managed to buy myself an old copy of this rare book at a very high price from an used book seller. It is definitely worth the read.

The Maid Silja (Nuorena nukkunut)

A beautiful and emotional story about young girl who died young and hard life in the countryside 100 years agp.
/Lisa Collier, United Kingdom
A very moody and touching book, that captures the spirit of a now gone time.
