Honglak Lee is currently an Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist of AI at LG AI Research, as well as an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Previously, he contributed to pioneering AI research as a Research Scientist at Google Research’s Brain Team. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2010 under the supervision of Professor Andrew Ng.

Dr. Lee’s research primary focuses on deep learning and representation learning, spanning a broad spectrum of subfields including unsupervised, semi-supervised, and supervised learning, transfer learning, reinforcement learning, structured prediction, graphical models, and optimisation. His innovative methodologies have been successfully applied to solve complex problems in computer vision and other perception-related domains.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Lee has received numerous prestigious accolades. He was honoured with best paper awards at both ICML and CEAS. He is also a recipient of the Google Faculty Research Award (2011) and the NSF CAREER Award (2015). Demonstrating his standing in the global scientific community, he was selected as one of “AI’s 10 to Watch” by IEEE Intelligent Systems in 2013 and named a research fellow by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in 2016.

In addition to his research, Dr. Lee has actively served the academic community. He was a guest editor for the IEEE TPAMI Special Issue on Learning Deep Architectures. Furthermore, he has consistently contributed to the peer-review process of leading AI and machine learning conferences, serving as an Area Chair for top-tier venues such as ICML, NeurIPS, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, AAAI, IJCAI, and ICLR.
