Alfred Nobel - Established the Nobel Prizes

Chemist, engineer and industrialist Alfred Nobel left 31 million SEK (today about 265 million dollars) to fund the Nobel Prizes.

When Alfred was five years old his father Immanuel, an inventor and builder, moved to St. Petersburg. Alfred joined him a few years later.

Based on Alfred’s work and patents a whole new industry developed. Within ten years, 16 explosives producing factories had been founded in 14 countries.

In memoriam

Osamu Shimomura passed away on 19 October. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2008 for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP, a protein that has become one of the most important tools used in contemporary bioscience.

Thomas A. Steitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009 for the crystallographic determination of ribosome structures at high resolution and for the skilful use of these structures to clarify fundamental and medically important aspects of ribosome function. He passed away on 9 October, age 78.

Physics Laureate Leon Lederman  was awarded the 1988 Physics Prize for the neutrino beam method and the discoveries made using this, discoveries that opened entirely new opportunities for research into the innermost structure and dynamics of matter. He passed away on 3 October.

Physics Laureate Charles Kao passed away on 23 September. His discoveries have paved the way for optical fiber technology, which today is used for almost all telephony and data communication.
