Motivation:Dr Oswald T. Avery, the Hospital of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, NY, US, was nominated for being the first physician in the world to establish a systematic search for enzymes capable of hydrolizing the polysaccharides found in the capsular material of various types of pneumococci - the biological attack upon bacterial infections. R. Dubos, the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, NY, US, was nominated for being closely associated with Avery in his work. Sir Alexander Fleming, prof, London University, GB, was nominated for the discovery of penicillin. Nominator was L.W. Gorham, prof medicine, Albany, NY, US. Nomination was declared invalid by the Nobel Committee.
