|Number:||23 - 4|
|Name:||Carl von Ossietzky|
|Profession:||Journalist, editor and peace activist.|
|Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 1935|
|Name:||Friedrich Heinrich Christoph Küster|
|Motivation:||Ossietzky and Küster were nominated for their efforts to promote pacifism and peace. They had been active in the organized German peace movement, and they were both confined to concentration camps when Hitler became chancellor in 1933.|
|Profession:||Former professor. Nobel Peace Prize laureate 1927.|
|Comments:||Some of Ossietzky's friends who were in exile in Paris initiated a campaign to promote his candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize. They hoped that a peace prize would protect him from further atrocities by the Nazi government. In 1936 Ossietzky was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1935. Quidde suggested a divided prize between Ossietzky and Küster. If this was not agreed upon by the Committee, he suggested that the prize was awarded Ossietzky.|
