Short interview with Carl-Henrik Heldin, new chairman of the board of the Nobel Foundation

 

Telephone interview with Carl-Henrik Heldin, 11 April 2013. The interviewer is Nobelprize.org's Merci Olsson.

Congratulations, Carl Henrik Heldin, on the news that you will be elected as the Chairman of the Board for the Nobel Foundation.
Carl-Henrik Heldin: Thank you very much.

Can you tell us, what are your initial thoughts about becoming the Chairman of the board?
Carl-Henrik Heldin: Firstly, I am overwhelmed.  I am glad and honoured to have the trust of the Nobel Foundation and I look forward to working with them.

What are your expectations and what do you hope to achieve with this position?
Carl-Henrik Heldin: The Nobel Prize has a unique standing internationally and I see it as a very important task to ensure the Nobel Prize’s unique reputation and credibility.

Can you tell us a little about your background?
Carl-Henrik Heldin: I’m a cancer researcher in Uppsala, Sweden, and I work at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.

What is your fondest memory in connect to the Nobel Prize and Nobel Laureates?
Carl-Henrik Heldin: It is very exciting to follow each year who will receive the Nobel Prize especially if you have a connection to them. I remember in particular meeting Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini back in 1986 as I worked in a similar area.
