Leif Johansson Appointed as Chairman for the Newly Established Advisory Board of the Nobel Foundation
On Wednesday November 16, 2011, the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation decided to establish an International Advisory Board. Leif Johansson, former President and CEO of the Volvo Group and present Chairman of Ericsson, was appointed as its Chairman starting on the same day.
Alfred Nobel was a firm believer in the advancement of science and rationality. His interest in literature and philosophy is well documented, as well as his commitment to the cause of peace. His strong resistance to national boundaries and support of international cooperation was the root of the wording in his will that no consideration whatsoever was to be given to the nationality of the candidates for the Nobel Prize.
The purpose of the International Advisory Board of the Nobel Foundation is to contribute to the realisation of Alfred Nobel’s intentions and the promotion of his values to the global community. It is expected to help develop the activities conducted within the Nobel sphere and to provide guidance and support in financial matters. The Advisory Board will function in an advisory capacity to the Board of Directors of the Nobel Foundation.
The Advisory Board shall consist of outstanding individuals with experience in areas relevant to the future development of the Nobel organisations. Leif Johansson was elected the first chairman of the Advisory Board. The other members are expected to be appointed during 2012.
