Benes advocated peace, justice and international law in the League of Nations while serving as Czechoslovakian Foreign Minister, and he continued to promote peace when he became president of Czechoslovakia.
In 1938 Benes had to capitulate to the German ultimatum and Czechoslovakia lost Sudetenland in September. He resigned from office October 5, 1938, and went into exile. In 1939 he was living in the USA, working as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago.
