Press release from Nobel Prize Outreach

Nobel Prize laureates discuss health for all

19 November 2025

Access to affordable, high-quality healthcare is one of the most striking achievements of the last century. It reflects the steady advance of medicine and health policy through open, international collaboration. But across the world, success is uneven. This year’s Nobel Week Dialogue, on 9 December in Gothenburg, will explore some ways to achieve health for all.

Chemistry laureates Frances Arnold and Emmanuelle Charpentier will take part in the discussions together with medicine laureate Paul Nurse. Economic sciences laureate Jean Tirole will also participate alongside Dr. Javid Abdelmoneim, president of Médecins Sans Frontières—the organization that received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. Several other academics, policymakers and advisors within the fields of for example medical physiology, public health, experimental cardiovascular research and clinical integrative physiology will also join for the day

Frances Arnold warns that closing the borders for scientists and for ideas risks progress in medicine and science more broadly: “There’s a significant challenge to the free flow of ideas and people happening now. Science thrives when ideas are exchanged, and international collaborations are critical, which also includes the exchange of researchers. If we silo science in separate countries, then we lose much of this dynamic and the progress it fuels. The connection between international discussion and collaboration is what makes science move forward.”

With a focus on the economics and politics of health, this year’s dialogue will tackle issues including how mental health, diseases of ageing and the prevention of chronic disease conditions must rise up political agendas. Speakers will also discuss how new discoveries and technologies — from AI to personalised medicine — can be harnessed for the common good. Discussions will include the future of drug discovery, the rise of antimicrobial resistance, the economics of sustainable and affordable health provision and healthy diets.
